If you want the very cheapest but still the highest power FRS-only handheld radios (no license required), which come with powerful and excellent features for the money, at almost the same price as the cheapest toy FRS-only radios, then I highly recommend the RADIODDITY FS-T1.The RADIODDITY FS-T1 (~$30 including 2 radios) is a great option if you're buying your first FRS-only radios, or you're buying several to give or lend to a large group, or if you're going as cheap as possible so you don't mind too much if they get lost or stolen. However, these are not toys. They are incredible handheld radios for the price.Let's start with the basics. The RADIODDITY FS-T1 includes all these powerful features, coming close in capability to many other much more expensive GMRS radios: - Transmits at 2 watts (the maximum supported by FRS regulations) - Supports all 22 FRS and GMRS simplex channels. (FRS does not support GMRS repeater input frequencies) - NOAA weather channels - Commercial FM Radio (music/news) - Support for 154 privacy CTCSS/DCS tones/codes (which is pretty good to create a group without outside radio interference). - Basic channel, squelch, volume controls, calling/alert tone, unsquelch/monitor, and both channel and frequency display. - Other advanced handset features, such as keypad lock, VOX mode, Busy Channel lockout, Transmit time-out-timer, and dual-watch dual-frequency listening. - Included 1500ma lithium ion rechargable batteries, no need to buy disposable or rechargeable AA or AAA batteries. - Split cable 2 in 1 charger, to charge from a single USB adaptor and wall socket. - Includes an ear-mic plug-in accessory, flashlight, belt-clip and wrist-strap.The RADIODDITY FS-T1 (~$30 including 2 handsets) is ~$20 cheaper than the BTECH FRS-A1 (~$50 including 2 handsets), ie. The RADIODDITY FS-T1 is ~$10 cheaper per handset. This price savings means, compared other highest-end handsets, the RADIODDITY FS-T1 has a few limitations: - It is charged through a Micro-USB connector (a little older/slower) compared to a USB-C connector. - The mic/earphone jack is a single combined smaller pin/plug, not a standard K1 dual-pin size/style, and therefore not compatible with high-end HAM or GMRS ear-mic's or shoulder-mics or common PC programming cables. - Although you can buy a proper PC programming cable for this radio, doing so would increase your cost, and this radio also requires custom programming software, which may or may not be free, and this radio is not supported by Chirp, the industry standard PC programming application, which is definitely free. - The two ear-mic accessories included with this radio, are not K1 size/style, so they can't be reused on other K1 jack HAM or GMRS radios. - It doesn't have a channel scan feature, nor scanning for privacy CTCSS/DCS tones/codes, and "only" supports 154 privacy tones/codes, so this limits your ability to find and join other people's conversations outside your group. - The Commercial FM Radio on this handset only has scan/search, not incremental tuning of frequency, so there might be some weak radio stations you can't tune in. - Cannot customize the channel name (only shows channel # and frequency) - No led light indicator to light-up when transmitting/receiving a signal - Charger connects to the handset, not directly to the battery, so you can't charge extra batteries while you are using the radio away from the charger. - No IPxx dust or water resistance ratings.However, again, this is not a toy. It is one of the best FRS-only radios you can get for the money. If you want the cheapest you can buy, with still far more features than any toy or bubble-pack FRS radios, then start with the RADIODDITY FS-T1. If you need all the extra features listed above, and are willing to pay an extra ~$10 per handset to get them, then also consider the BTECH FRS-A1.
