Although I do not own a Windows PC, it is possible to manually program this radio after mapping the manual to the actual menus on the radio. Which is good information to have as I found out on a simplex net with a PL and no offset. This is a physically small radio that fits into most spaces in a small car. I have enjoyed, mostly, the ability to have more transmission power than an HT. The Anytone 778uv has 3 power settings that are easy to access from the quality microphone. However, as with other devices that timeshare buttons, you will need to generally touch/push a second button to confirm your choice of setting. Not a real issue but something to note. The power settings are 5W, 15W, and 25W and I have generally found in my area that is sufficient to reach many repeaters. As you may know or will find, the antenna and terrain are the key to how well your radio works. I have a Nagoya 771 mag mount in my car and at home, I connect to a Diamond X50. Both do very well in most cases with the Anytone 778uv. Mobile, I can generally reach about 30 miles and with my base station antenna, I can reach nearly 60 miles on 25W.The ‘front-end’ is definitely better than a Baofeng HT, meaning that it hears a lot more on the same frequencies than my UV-5R on the same antennas. The noise rejection is also better. If you plan to use this as a base station, you will need a 25 amp P/S for full power and I would highly recommend in your car to run, the included, long lead directly to your battery for maximum power. It will run from a cigarette lighter but you will see the on-screen voltage reading, drop to 11vdc or more when transmitting at 25W.This radio does not have a fan and will get warm at high power. I would avoid mounting it in direct sun (at least during the summer months) to help avoid issues. Overall, I really like this radio and am considering purchasing a second one for an EM box or to have a permanent mounted one for the car. I have had nothing but good transmission reports and am happy emu purchase.
