I've checked out several brands of these multi-power-source radios, and none were worth buying. I haven't dropped this one or anything yet, but the case seems to be of strong plastic, and those black end-caps are sturdy rubber. The crank function works well. It's been raining here so I haven't tested the solar panel. The reception is strong, pulls in the weaker stations that my other, comparable, radios can't. It has a telescoping antenna, which many of its competitors don't. My only criticism is the preset system. It has 19 presets, which is great. But there aren't numbered buttons; you have to push the preset button repeatedly to cycle through all of them until you get to the one you want. I didn't take a star off because on an emergency radio I don't expect (or want) a lot of unnecessary buttons. And I worked around the problem by storing only the 4 stations I think will be helpful in an emergency, and filling all 19 spots with those four. So I never have to push the button more than three times to get the station I want.
