First of all, this walkie is the double of a Retevis unit (777 I think) right down to the flashlight. Interestingly, the BaoFeng's rating are consistenly slightly lower than those of the Retevis and the reviews are clearly skewed towards commercial use. I can only think that's due to families buying the Retevis since the name sounds less sketchy and having much lower expectations that contractors, apartment managers, construction companies etc who don't care what the name is on the walkie, just that it's cheap. Even so, how can you expect robust quality at less the $20/ piece. That is simply absurd; ten years ago, these would have been rubbish walkies, but Chinese building standards have grown enormously. Yes the battery storage capacity isn't accurate and the range is not as stated by BaoFeng. But that's to be expected.What's not to like? These walkies are unbelievably inexpensive and function very well. Just know that you're not buying a $300 Motorola and you will be pleasantly surprised. The battery life is quite good considering the price, they charge properly and have audible channel switching. The included earpieces provide good sound fidelity (though we switched out to acoustic tube earwigs w/mics since they look cool for my kids - very Secret Service). All in all, I can't imagine a better walkie talkie available for the money spent. My children know they can only use these when they have belts on since the clip will keep the walkie from hitting the ground, not the case when clipped to a waistband.None of these have hit the ground yet, nor have we had them long enough to know whether the earpiece cables will break easily. But so far so good.
